Tue 23 April 2019

Minister of Economy and Trade Mansour Bteish addressed a letter to the Minister of Interior and Municipalities Raya El Hassan calling up to “take stricter control measures over the street vendors and take necessary actions to control all the offenders and prohibit all the illegal vendors who did not comply with the applicable laws and rules, especially those related to the food safety”.

The letter stated the following: “Whereas article 71 of the Consumer Protection Law gave the employees of the Ministries of Economy & Trade; Agriculture; Public Health; Tourism and Interior & Municipalities the responsibility for implementing the provisions of the present law, each within the area of its authority,

Whereas it was revealed that many food trucks and street vendors are selling goods that do not comply with the specifications, thus jeopardizing the health and safety if the consumer, in particular the foodstuffs sold on the food trucks or inside cars that are unequipped to do the same,

Whereas the capacities required for controlling and seizing all the mobile food trucks are not available at the Ministry of Economy and Trade, unlike the municipalities which are entitled to control and seize these trucks pursuant to law n° 118/1977. Therefore, we hope that you will ask the governors, municipalities and the municipal unions to take strict measures in controlling the vendors”.

Moreover, Minister Bteish expressed “the willingness of the Ministry of Economy and Trade to assist the municipalities in this campaign as well as to organize specialized training sessions for the health inspectors and the municipal police in term of the food safety”.
