Minister of Economy and Trade Raed Khoury made this morning a tour of the markets accompanied by the Director of the Consumer Protection Tarek Younes and the inspectors of the Directorate to make sure the traders comply with the applicable regulations and laws and do not exploit the citizens. For this purpose, the tour included the sweet shops in Zalka and Sahel El Metn.
In this regard, Khoury declared after his tour: “we focus on sweet shops for it is the holidays season to make sure that consumers are not being exploited during this period and specific weights and specifications are complied with. Consequently, we made a record of offences related to weights because neither the real net weight nor the prices were clearly showed.”
Moreover, Minister Khoury added: “we warned the traders earlier about these offences and the necessity to show both the price and weight of each commodity for sale. It is to mention that records of offences were made, to be submitted to the competent courts. I seize this opportunity to reiterate to both the consumers and traders that the Ministry of Economy and Trade closely controls the markets through its inspectors and will not tolerate any offence in this regard.”
In addition, Minister Khoury pointed out that many traders already complied with the regulation without breaching any laws, stressing that the Ministry will pursuit the offenders for what they do is legally inadmissible” calling the traders to “have mercy on citizens so that the Ministry of Economy can have mercy on them because it will not tolerate in implementing the laws”.
Minister Khoury assured the consumers that most of the traders comply with the laws, weights and specifications stipulated by the Ministry. Consequently, he urged them to inform the Ministry of any violation they may incur by calling on hotline 1739.
It is to mention that the inspections made by the Consumer Protection Directorate started two weeks ago and tackled mainly the sweet shops upon the directions of the Minister Raed Khoury. In this regard, the Ministry made 45 records of offence out of 300 inspection tours; to know that these inspections are still going on.
