Memorandum issued by the Ministry of Economy and Trade in terms of ensuring the food security and availability of basic commodities under the current circumstances
Beirut- March 8th, 2026
In light of the recent developments and economic challenges, Ministry of Economy and Trade elaborated a preemptive plan to ensure the food security and availability of basic commodities across the Lebanese regions and maintain consistency of the procurement chains as well as to prevent any markets’ disruptions or monopoly or prices’ manipulation or exploitation of the current circumstances.
In this regard, the Ministry works towards the implementation of the following measures:
First: Benefit from the available strategic stock
According to the Ministry’s available data, the current stock of basic commodities, including foodstuffs, wheat and fuel, is sufficient to cover several months of local consumption. The Ministry monitors the stock’ levels on daily basis in coordination with importers and suppliers to ensure the continuity of the commodities’ distribution and delivery to different regions and retail outlets, without any interruption or monopolistic practices.
Second: Ensure additional shipments preemptively
In parallel with inventory tracking, the Ministry works to ensure the ongoing supply chain to Lebanon on regular basis.
To this end, the Ministry undertakes the following:
- Identify national needs for basic commodities for the coming months.
- Urge the importers to early import additional quantities and avoid waiting for world price fluctuations, since the phase’ priority consists in ensuring the availability of commodities and safeguarding food security.
