Fraudulent activities via e-mail or SMS messages

Thu 15 December 2011
The Directorate of Consumer Protection would like to indicate that occasionally some fraudulent Email or SMS messages are sent from abroad. Several days ago, an e-mail message was sent stating that the receiver won a great amount of money or a luxury car, impersonating a certain company. The company issued on its website a statement denying the companys connection with the messages and warning of their fraudulent nature.
The issue of the fraudulent email messages is being reasonably dealt with by local and global Internet service providers (ISPs), provided that the user is subscribed to the generally free spam filter service (Anti SPAM services).
Whereas concerning fraudulent SMS, the Ministry of Economy and Trade, in close cooperation with the Telephony Regulating Authority and the cell phone companies in Lebanon, is able to ban foreign telephone numbers that are used to send such messages to access the Lebanese network, under citizen complaint to the Consumer Protection hotline number 1739.
Finally, no matter what technical actions were taken, fraudulent activities keep on finding new methods. The most robust and the best solution to fight this phenomenon, is through awareness and constant caution.
